Snow lovers across a wide swath of New Jersey will finally get their wish on Wednesday as accumulating snow is expected most of the state with the higher amounts of 3 to 5 inches expected in the northwestern counties, which also woke up to some light snow this morning.

The snow is expected to start falling sometime after 7 a.m. Wednesday in areas northwest of I-95 before mixing with and changing to all rain sometime in the later afternoon or evening, the National Weather Service said.

The northern half of the state is expected to get at least 1 inch of snow with higher amounts in Sussex, Warren and Morris counties, while there will less than an inch for most of South Jersey on what will be a windy Wednesday.

An AccuWeather.com forecast map is calling for lesser amounts of 1 to 3 inches of snow just in northern New Jersey.

Up to 6 inches of snow could fall on Wednesday during a winter storm that could bring some snowfall to most of the state.

The evening commute on Wednesday might be affected, though the exact timing of a changeover to rain remains uncertain on Monday morning,

While areas along and southeast of the New Jersey Turnpike might see a “quick burst of snow” when precipitation begins, little to to no accumulation is likely, the weather service said in its morning forecast discussion.

“Even if snow does occur at the onset long the I-95 corridor, surface temperatures may be too warm for any accumulations (especially on roadways). However, a quick dusting on grassy and elevated surfaces cannot be entirely ruled out yet,” the weather service said.

Rain will push away from the area on Thursday morning.

On Monday, a half-inch of snow could fall in northwestern New Jersey by this evening, but the rest of the state will see plain rain this morning that lighten to showers this afternoon.

Winds will pick up to 15 to 20 mph and gust as high as 35 mph before diminishing this evening, forecasters say. Temps will peak in the low 40s this afternoon before dropping into the 20s overnight. About a half-inch of rain is expected by 4 p.m.
