The atmosphere inside Jersey Mike’s Arena was electric during Rutgers’ 68-64 overtime victory against Big Ten rival Ohio State on Saturday. Spring semester hasn’t officially started, but a loud and rowdy student section still turned out in full force in hopes of seeing the Scarlet Knights get revenge for their controversial loss in Columbus last month.
They got their wish, with Rutgers winning a thriller in overtime after forward Mawot Mag hit a game-clinching three-pointer with 38 seconds to play.
Rutgers (13-5, 4-2), which has gone 7-1 in their last eight contests, now stands alone at second place in the Big Ten standings.
The Scarlet Knights got a win after the final buzzer, too, with five-star forward Ace Bailey becoming the highest-ranked recruit to commit to the Scarlet Knights in the modern recruiting era.
Here’s what they said about the Scarlet Knights after their latest win on and off the court:
“Rutgers/Ohio State has been such a battle, as you would expect. To say the Scarlet Knights are relentless defensively would be putting it lightly. Gutsy 2-0 week for Steve Pikiell’s team, who is right near the top of the Big Ten.” — CBB on FOX broadcaster John Fanta
“Rutgers rightfully gets revenge for getting a victory stolen from their hands earlier this year as they beat Ohio State 68-64. Cam Spencer led the Scarlet Knights with 21, Cliff Omoruyi had 14 points and 10 rebounds.” — Jonathan Warriner, Making the Madness
“Rutgers gets revenge and beats Ohio State to move to 3-2 Q1, 6-4 Q1/2. The Scarlet Knights will likely be up to a 5-seed in tomorrow’s projection. Really good win over a pretty desperate team.” — Brad Wachtel, acclaimed bracketologist
“Suffice it to say, Ace Bailey to Rutgers is MASSIVE. We think he has No. 1 potential in the class nationally. His wow factor is better than anyone in the nation from the class of 2024. Superstar potential.” — Justin Young, recruiting analyst, HoopSeen
“Ace Bailey just made the #Rutgers Scarlet Knights very happy with his commitment. The staff did a great job targeting and focusing on this game changer, no doubt an anchor to their 2024 class. #Jersey #NYCMetro show that love!” — Horace Neysmith, AllMetroHoops
“Sensational commit for Knights.” — Dick Weiss, former New York Daily News college basketball writer.
“Okay, I really like what Pikiell is doing. Griffith next year and Bailey the year following is a very, very good look. These could be very valuable pickups for the future of the RU program.” — Jake Weingarten, StockRisers.com
